Forecast courtesy of Sugar Bowl Cool temperatures this morning are a sign of the approaching cold area of low pressure. Cold, heavy snow forecast for the holiday weekend

Weather forecast courtesy of Sugar Bowl Resort Cold, Snow Showers Today, Heavy Snow Thursday Night through Sunday. Squaw, Sugar Bowl to open this weekend

Thanks to a series of early snowstorms and advanced snowmaking equipment, two resorts will open this weekend. Squaw Valley will celebrate with an early opening this Friday, November 16th. Scheduled lifts include Exhibition, Red Dog, Resort at Squaw Creek and FirstVenture. Look for part of the upper mountain to open by Thanksgiving. 36 inches and counting

This week’s snow fall has resorts anticipating a prosperous holiday season. As of noon, Wednesday, Alpine Meadows reported 36″ of fresh snow, Sugar Bowl has 34″, Heavenly has 16-20″ and Squaw Valley has received 32″. Heavenly and Northstar plan to open on November 16th, followed by Squaw Valley on November 21. Alpine Meadows will open on December 7th. Boreal has traditionally claimed the earliest opening with a tentative date of October 26th, and snow making has begun. Stay tuned.

Last call

Another season comes to a close this weekend, with all but one resort shutting down as spring sports quickly take over. Expect a light dusting of snow today and sunshine for the weekend. Enjoy closing weekend events Saturday and Sunday at Squaw, Heavenly and Sugar Bowl. Tahoe ski resorts are gearing up for another early season. Each year, the resorts hire thousands of winter sports enthusiasts for jobs ranging from retail sales to ski patrol. Free lessons and rentals at Sugar Bowl

Sugar Bowl Resort is now offering free ski and snowboard standard rentals and group lessons of any level 7 days a week through the end of the season with the purchase of a general admission lift ticket. Rentals are available at the Mt. Judah and Village rental shops; Lessons are available at Mt. Judah at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and run 2 hours. For complete details and restrictions click here
