Squaw, Sugar Bowl to open this weekend

Thanks to a series of early snowstorms and advanced snowmaking equipment, two resorts will open this weekend. Squaw Valley will celebrate with an early opening this Friday, November 16th. Scheduled lifts include Exhibition, Red Dog, Resort at Squaw Creek and FirstVenture. Look for part of the upper mountain to open by Thanksgiving. Opening dates for Tahoe resorts

With snow in the forecast today through Saturday, resort openings are right around the corner. Boreal has been open on and off for a couple of weeks, but is currently closed until further notice. Boreal to open Friday

Mother Nature brought the gift of an early snowstorm to the Sierra’s this week, putting the resorts in high gear for opening day. Boreal will open the Castle Peak Quad chair this weekend. 36 inches and counting

This week’s snow fall has resorts anticipating a prosperous holiday season. As of noon, Wednesday, Alpine Meadows reported 36″ of fresh snow, Sugar Bowl has 34″, Heavenly has 16-20″ and Squaw Valley has received 32″. Heavenly and Northstar plan to open on November 16th, followed by Squaw Valley on November 21. Alpine Meadows will open on December 7th. Boreal has traditionally claimed the earliest opening with a tentative date of October 26th, and snow making has begun. Stay tuned.

Being a college student has its perks. Several north shore resorts offer considerable discounts for college students. Squaw and Alpine offer discounted tickets on specific weeks when you pre-register. Boreal has a n ongoing special price for Friday skiing/riding. Troops ski for free

The following resorts offer free skiing and riding for U.S. Military personnel with a valid ID: Squaw Valley: Complimentary lift tickets for active duty military members every Sunday through Friday, excluding holidays. To redeem, military can present proof of active duty status at Squaw’s Tickets, Passes and Snowsports Center at the base of the mountain. Boreal opens Accelerator

Boreal’s snowmaking crew has been busy preparing for the holiday weekend. The Accelerator lift opens Thursday top to bottom, the terrain park on South 40 is open and a second park is in the works. Lift tickets are $45 for adults, $40 for teens and $16 for children. College students and military personnel receive lift tickets for $15 on most Friday’s during the season including Veteran’s Day.

Tahoe ski resorts are gearing up for another early season. Each year, the resorts hire thousands of winter sports enthusiasts for jobs ranging from retail sales to ski patrol.
